Accelerated Reading (AR)  is designed to be part of a comprehensive reading program. It does not replace a reading series or other instructional materials; rather, it supports and enhances them. Reading is a skill and, as with every skill, it requires not just instruction, but practice. Lots of practice! Reading practice enables students to apply the skills and strategies they have been taught. And it draws students into the world of  "real" reading---a world in which people learn from and enjoy books. Our hope is that all students will become life long readers!

Accelerated Reading is used in grades 1-8. Students read a book in their "ZPD" range and take an online quiz to check for comprehension. In some instances, they may also take a vocabulary quiz or literacy quiz  from the same book. Their goal is to score and maintain an 85% average when taking quizzes while staying in their ZPD range. Each student has an individualized plan where their ZPD range and goals are determined between them and their reading teacher. Students are to be reading at their "recreational reading level".
